Breast augmentation is one of the most frequently requested cosmetic surgeries in Tampa and across the U.S. Breasts come in all shapes and sizes, and they may undergo many changes throughout a woman’s life. The toll that weight gain, weight loss, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and gravity can have on a woman’s breast shape and volume can be significant. Breast augmentation, which may also be combined with other procedures, such as a breast lift, can help enhance a naturally small breast or a breast that is no longer as full as it once was.
Are You A Candidate For Breast Augmentation?
The only way to determine if you are a candidate for breast augmentation is by meeting with Dr. Lohith Bose for an in-person consultation. However, this procedure could be right for you if you:
- Are bothered by the size or shape of your breasts
- Desire greater symmetry between your breasts
- Are bothered by changes to your breasts that have occurred after pregnancy and/or breastfeeding
- Wish to restore lost volume to your breasts
- Wish for greater proportion within your figure
Types Of Breast Implants
Breast implants come in all shapes, sizes and in multiple types, although all of them can be put into one of two categories: saline or silicone.
Saline Breast Implants
A saline breast implant is one that is pumped full of sterile saline until the implant reaches the desire size. While this type of implant is at higher risk of losing its shape if the implant begins to leak, any leaked saline can be safely and naturally eliminated from the body.
Silicone Breast Implants
Silicone gel implants are the choice of many women who prefer a more natural-feeling implant. However, silicone gel implants can lose their form and shape if the gel begins to leak outside the implant encasement. As an alternative, some women choose a form-stable silicone implant, or ‘gummy bear implant’, that are stronger and more resistant to breakage.
Which Is Right For You?
Choosing an implant is a deeply personal decision. Lohith Bose can assist you in better understanding your options and answering any questions or concerns you may have about them. It is important to note that saline implants are the only implant approved by the FDA for use in women ages 18-21, whereas women age 22 and older can choose either saline or silicone implants.
Types Of Augmentation Techniques
Breast augmentation has been performed millions of times around the world. Over the years, methods and techniques have evolved and improved to provide today’s women with better options for augmentation than ever before. Now, there are three primary types of augmentation incisions, all of which are located on inconspicuous areas of the body. Your incision may occur in a semi-circular pattern around the nipple and areola (periareolar), just beneath the breast (inframammary), or across the underarm (transaxillary). If you decide to undergo breast augmentation, you and Dr. Bose will discuss which method is right for you.
All breast augmentations are performed with general anesthesia. The entire procedure typically takes between one and two hours, and most women are allowed to go home the same day. Keep in mind that it is normal to experience some swelling and discomfort in the first couple of weeks after surgery, during which time patients should rest and avoid strenuous activity.
