A breast lift (mastopexy) is a surgical procedure used to raise the breasts into a higher position. Many women undergo breast lifts after aging and life events lead to sagging and shape loss. As of 2014, breast lifts were twice as common as breast augmentations, as many women who are otherwise happy with the size of their breasts simply desire greater contour and a more youthful shape. Sagging breasts can be caused by many different things, including:
- Pregnancy and/or breastfeeding
- Weight gain
- Weight loss
- Gravity and age
- Genetics
Dr. Lohith Bose can remove excess skin from sagging breasts and reposition the breasts in a way that transforms a woman’s figure. However, it is important to note that a breast lift will not necessarily affect the size or volume of the breasts. Women who desire changes in the size or shape of their breasts may wish to consider a breast augmentation, which may be performed at the same time as a breast lift. Likewise, women who wish to decrease the size of their breasts may consider a breast reduction.
Are You A Good Candidate For A Breast Lift?
You may be a candidate for a breast lift if you:
- Are unhappy with changes in the shape of your breasts
- Have breast tissue that appears to be stretched
- Wish for greater contour in breasts that are flat, pendulous, or elongated
- Desire greater support beneath your breasts
- Have nipples that are positioned beneath the crease of your breast
- Have nipples that are enlarged
- Have nipples that point toward the ground
Before you can undergo a breast lift, you will need to meet with Dr. Lohith Bose here at Bose Plastic Surgery for a one-on-one consultation. During this meeting, Dr. Bose will discuss your goals for treatment, and evaluate your health to ensure you can undergo the procedure.
What To Expect From A Breast Lift
Breast lifts – like other breast surgeries – can be performed in many different ways. The technique that is right for you will depend upon your goals for treatment, the extent of sagging within your breast, and whether you intend to undergo a simultaneous procedure at the time of your lift, such as an augmentation.
All breast lifts are performed with general anesthesia. Dr. Bose will make an incision either around the areola only, around the areola and down the underside of the breast, or around the areola, down the underside of the breast and also horizontally along the breast fold. With each of these three options, there will be some post-surgical scarring, which will improve over time.
Through the incision, Dr. Bose will remove excess skin and reshape the breast. As the incisions are closed, the breast skin will be tighter, which lends to a more youthful appearance.
Recovery
Lohith Bose, MD will give you post-surgical instructions, which may include the use of a support bra during the recovery period. You may also be given medication to prevent infection during the post-operative period. You will notice the results of your breast lift right away, although you may have some swelling, as well as incision lines that will fade over time.
