The face may take the brunt of anti-aging treatments, but the hands are often one of the first areas of the body to actually reveal a person’s age. After years of exposure to environmental toxins and sun damage, the hands can develop wrinkles and discoloration, lose volume, and develop age spots. Fortunately, hand rejuvenation can restore a youthful appearance and peel the hands of time back on your hands.
What Is Hand Rejuvenation?
Hand rejuvenation can be performed in many different ways, but we here at Bose Plastic Surgery prefer to treat patients with minimal invasiveness whenever possible. With our hand rejuvenation techniques, we can deliver quality results from the comfort of our office –usually in just a few minutes.
Hyaluronic Acid Fillers
These fillers are becoming increasingly common for treating fine lines and wrinkles. These fillers are injected at shallow points all over the hand, where they bind with water molecules to plump and hydrate the skin. The result is a softer appearance, increased volume, and fewer lines and wrinkles. These fillers typically offer results that last a few months before additional treatment is necessary.
Collagen-Boosting Fillers
We can use collagen-boosting fillers that work in two different ways. First, the filler provides instantaneous volume to the hands, creating a softer appearance right away. The filler also contains a substance that raises the skin and encourages the body to produce natural collagen. The collagen intertwines with the filler, creating a semi-permanent result.
For most patients, hand rejuvenation using collagen-boosting injections can create results that last two years, although some patients report results that last as much as 3, 4 or 5 years before additional treatment is needed. We have found that hand rejuvenation results tend to vary according to the activity level and lifestyle of the patient, as well as the patient’s age.
Fat Injections
Another way of restoring lost volume to the hands is by utilizing a fat transfer. During a fat transfer, the hands are injected with fat harvested from a donor site on the patient’s body. This process is more invasive and requires liposuction of fatty tissue from another area of the body, such as the abdominal region or the thighs. The fat is then purified and injected directly into the hands, where it can be contoured to create a smooth and softened appearance. With fat injections, the healing and recovery time is longer than collagen-boosting filler injections, since it takes time for the fat donor site to heal.
Surgical Hand Rejuvenation
In some cases, patients will benefit from surgical removal of excess skin on the hands. Dr. Bose usually only recommends this in cases where a patient’s hands are extremely wrinkled and have a significant amount of excess skin that cannot be adequately filled in using a collagen-boosting dermal filler.
