Male breast reduction is a surgical procedure used to treat gynecomastia in men. This condition is characterized by an enlargement of breast tissue in boys and men that resembles the appearance of the female breast.
Gynecomastia is known to be caused by hormonal imbalances which may be the result of one of many different causes, including genetic predisposition and the use of certain medications. The condition may occur on one side or both, and it may result in breast firmness and tenderness.
According to the National Institutes of Health, approximately 1 in 3 men will be affected by gynecomastia at some point in their lives, although some estimates put the number close to 50 percent. Though the condition on its own is benign and non-threatening, it can be a source of frustration and embarrassment. For these men, male breast reduction may provide an effective solution – especially if other more conservative treatments do not provide the desired results.

Male breast reduction is the removal of fat and breast tissues to provide a flatter chest that is more consistent with the average masculine physique. It can restore confidence to men who have felt embarrassed or insecure about the appearance of their chest. This procedure has been successful in treating gynecomastia in both adults and teenagers who desire immediate improvement and long-lasting results.
Lohith Bose, MD is highly skilled in the surgical treatment of gynecomastia. He understands the importance of male breast reduction and the role it can play in helping a man feel comfortable in his own skin. Advancements in modern medical technology have made it possible to perform this procedure in two different ways – liposuction and tissue excision.
Liposuction is the most frequently used method for male breast reduction in the U.S. Two small incisions are made on either side of the chest, along the areola, or in the creases of the underarm. A tube is placed through the incisions and used to remove excess fat from the breast. The entire procedure is quick, effective, and leaves minimal scarring. It also allows for a rapid recovery, allowing men to return to work and other normal activities in just a few days.
Tissue excision reductions are used in severe cases of gynecomastia in which the skin surrounding the male breast has been stretched and is sagging. When skin is excised from the chest, it may leave some scarring, although Dr. Bose works diligently to ensure it is as subtle as possible. Tissue excisions allow for the removal of more fat and tissue that is possible using the liposuction method; however, the recovery process tends to be longer.
Regardless of which procedure Dr. Bose uses to treat you, keep in mind that it is normal to experience some soreness and swelling in the days following surgery. As the discomfort and swelling subside, you will begin to see the permanent results of your male breast reduction. It is possible to maintain these results for many years by maintaining a healthy weight. However, weight gain or continued use of certain medications could cause gynecomastia to recur.
